Process And Technology

The potential of Simeco S.p.A. lies in its highly qualified, multidisciplinary teams of engineers and technicians, with a permanent staff of about  90 employees and a total staff of about 180 people depending on work loads.

The technical department is responsible for the management and the development of the projects from the completion of process design to the specification of all equipment (mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and control) up to construction details.

Feasibility Studies:  FS include Conceptual Design and Process Engineering activities. During FS, process documentation sufficiently detailed to develop Class IV Cost Estimate for each alternative plant configuration is prepared, this include plant location, plant layout, considerations about feedstock and products quality, block diagram, preliminary evaluation about the adequacy of existing utilities and off-sites systems, etc. Application of licensed technologies vs. open art is evaluated on the basis of the required project objectives. Selection among licensed technologies is performed on the basis of comprehensive and well-proven scoring methodologies.

Basic Design (BD): BD involves identification of any critical issue in terms of time, cost, quality and safety. Definition of primary and secondary systems (i.e. utilities production generation units and Off-Site systems); Block Flow Diagram; PFDs, Material Selection Diagram, P&IDs, Item List and Equipment Summary, Equipment Process Data Sheets, Duty Specification for secondary systems (i.e. utilities production generation units and Off-Site systems), characteristics and quantities of Feed and Products, utilities characteristics and consumptions (Utilities Summary), Heat and Mass Balance, Preliminary Electrical Load List, Effluent List, and preliminary lay out are developed during the BD. Test runs can be organized and coordinated in order to collect reliable information on feedstock quality, products characteristics, unit performance (i.e. capacity, turn down ratio, yields, products quality, utilities consumptions, effluent characteristics, ….). Assistance during HAZOP sessions is provided. Class III Cost Estimates are developed during BD.

Front End Engineering Design (FEED): FEED is aimed to support Project Final Investment Decision (FID). During FEED, definition of equipment and systems is sufficiently detailed to allow the development of Class II Cost Estimates and preparation of Tender Documents for EPIC bids. The following typical documents prepared during the BD are further implemented: Process Flow Diagrams for primary and secondary systems, Heat & Material Balance; Material Selection Diagrams; Item List and Equipment Summary; Process Data Sheets for machinery, static equipment (including equipment internals such as: trays, demisters, mixers, heating coils, etc.) and instrumentation; Duty Specifications for Packages; Utilities consumption estimates (Utilities Summary); Electrical Load List; Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams; specification for catalysts and chemicals. After FEED, Simeco may provide PMC (Project Management Consultancy) Services assisting Clients in the evaluation of EPC bids and in the implementation of EPC contracts in order to ensure that works proceed as contractually stated and that Owner’s interests are always protected.

Detail Engineering: during detailed design all process documents are developed and finalized up to Approved for Construction (AFC) status. During this phase, Simeco Process Department provides support to Project Management Team, HSE Dept., Construction Dept., and all technical departments to finalize engineering documents. Operating Procedures and Operating Manuals are issued as required by the specific scope of work, including Licensors and/or Packages Suppliers information. Operating Manuals including Pre-commissioning, commissioning, start-up and shut down procedures are prepared. Training classes for Clients’ operating personnel are carried out as required.
